Vehicle Recovery & Winching
Winch-outs for vehicles stuck in snow, mud, ditches, and soft ground — including recoveries off the shoulder on rural roads.
A vehicle that is stuck is not necessarily broken. Recovery is about getting it back onto solid ground without tearing something off it, and that is a matter of rigging technique and pull angles rather than brute force.
The Ottawa area produces a specific set of stuck vehicles: snowbanked at the curb after a plow goes by, slid into a ditch on a rural concession road, buried in soft ground during the spring thaw, high-centred on a gravel driveway. Each of those wants a different recovery approach.
The wrong recovery does real damage. A strap on the wrong point bends a subframe. A bad pull angle puts a car into the ditch harder than it went in. We rig off manufacturer recovery points where they exist and use the winch and truck positioning to control the direction of travel.
If the vehicle is damaged during the incident itself — a slide into a ditch that bends a control arm, for example — the recovery becomes a recovery plus a tow, and we will tell you that on site rather than letting you drive away on a vehicle that is not safe.
What this covers
- Winch-out from snow, mud, and soft ground
- Ditch and embankment recovery
- High-centred vehicles and driveway slide-offs
- Recovery from rural and gravel roads
- Assessment of whether the vehicle is safe to drive afterward
What happens when you call
- 1
Describe the situation
How far off the road, what surface, which way the vehicle is facing, and whether it is damaged. This determines the equipment sent.
- 2
Stay out of the recovery zone
Everyone stands well clear. Winch lines under load are genuinely dangerous and the exclusion area is larger than most people expect.
- 3
Rigging and pull
The driver rigs to proper recovery points and controls the direction the vehicle travels as it comes out.
- 4
Post-recovery check
A walk-around for damage. If the vehicle is not safe to drive, it gets towed instead.
Questions about recovery & winching
- Can you get to a rural road in winter?
- Usually, but conditions matter. Tell the dispatcher the road condition and how you got in — if you barely made it, a truck may not. We would rather tell you honestly than strand a second vehicle.
- Is recovery priced the same as a tow?
- No. Recovery is priced on the work involved — time on scene, equipment used, and difficulty. Ask for the estimate before work begins.
- My friend has a truck and a strap. Why call you?
- Because strap recoveries done off the wrong point are how bumpers, subframes, and tow hooks get destroyed, and because there is no insurance behind a favour.
